Assemblages (UForge Workshops)

Prepare to make an assemblage that tells a story with found objects. Look at work by Joseph Cornell, instructor Amy Hitchcock and other contemporary assemblage artists. Discuss how to construct narrative with found objects. Then learn techniques for making your assemblage: how to choose the perfect box, where to find supplies, gluing techniques, and more.

You have two options:

  • Section 2M is a brief talk and demonstration; you will leave ready to make your assemblage at home.
  • In Section 3M, you will complete your assemblage over four days.

From either class, one piece you produce will be included in the gallery exhibition, Stories, on view at UFORGE Gallery during the month of August 2012.

This class takes place at UFORGE Gallery, 767 Centre St, Jamaica Plain, just around the corner from the Eliot School. Download directions. (pdf)

This assignment will require you to find a specific object, whether inspirational or sentimental to create a final submission with it. Found art is described as art created from undisguised, but often modified, objects that are not normally considered art. Your challenge as participating artist is to tell a story through 2D (painting, photography, graphic or assemblage) or 3D (sculpture). Remember, someone’s trash may be your next treasure.

This class is part of our collaboration with UFORGE Gallery. Each workshop in the series ties to an exhibition theme. Take this or any class in the UFORGE series, and the art you make will be in the matching show, with a gallery reception, even possible reviews and sales.

UFORGE Gallery cultivates a creative, inclusive arts community with assignment-based, non-juried exhibitions and events.
