Basic Sewing



An introduction to the fundamentals of sewing. Start with a given plan and work it through to completion using hand and machine sewing. Learn to use a sewing machine, choose and cut patterns and use basic sewing terms, methods and tools. Please plan to use our machines; if time allows, the instructor may invite you to bring your own to the final session.
Completion qualifies students for Sewing Open Workshop and other intermediate classes such as Alterations and Sewing with a Pattern.

As you develop your personal sewing kit and shop for fabric, you may find this useful:
Recommended sewing kit:
- Class 66 bobbins (plastic)
- Dressmaker shears (Fiskars or Gingher)
- Paper scissors
- Assorted machine sewing needles
- Assorted hand sewing needles
- Common pins
- Pin cushion
- Seam ripper
- Dressmaker’s pencil or tailor’s chalk
- Tape measure 60”
- Ruler
- Dark and light color thread for basting
- Thimble
- Needle threader
- Sewing gauge
- Fabric (can be discussed in class)
