Documenting American Communities: Space & Place

Immerse yourself in the theory and practice of documentary photography. This is a seminar-style class. Choose a community (broadly defined) and begin a documentary photographic study of it. Examine and discuss a number of classic and contemporary documentary works, while emphasizing your own. The class will get you started, assuming you will continue your longer-term study after it ends. Bring your own camera (any kind) and be prepared to make prints outside of class.

From this class, one piece you produce will be included in the gallery exhibition, JP to Me: Unseen, on view at UFORGE Gallery during the month of April 2012.

Unseen is the fourth installment of a series of exhibitions titled JP to Me. This assignment will require you to explore and uncover unseen facets of Jamaica Plain. JP is a funky, diverse and green neighborhood nestled in the historic city of Boston Massachusetts. It has a pulse and rhythm all its own, rich in culture, community events and the arts. Your challenge as a participating artist is to find that special something seen only by you embodying the spirit of Jamaica Plain through 2D (painting, photography, graphic or assemblage) or 3D (sculpture).
