Imagination & Color in Painting

Gain an introduction to fundamentals of visual language, including composition and a vocabulary of process and ideas, with special focus on personal and psychological aspects of color. We will use acrylics (although if you have oils and prefer to use them, you may do so).

The process of investigation will include sketches, photographs, still lifes and other sources, and practical skills will include stretching canvas, preparing surfaces and mixing paint. Develop a strong foundation and personal vision that will serve you going forward.

All levels are welcome.

       Alizarin Crimson
       Indian Red
       Carmine Red
       Cadmium Yellow
       Lemon Yellow
       Ochre Yellow
       Ultramarine Blue
       Cobalt Blue
       Prussian Blue
       Raw Sienna
       Titanium White
       Raw Umber
       Burnt Sienna

  • For oil painters: mineral spirits or Gamsol (odorless) in an easily coverable container
  • A selection of flat and round brushes for your choice of oils or acrylics: at least one of each in sizes #2, 4, 6, 8, 10
  • White gesso
  • 2-inch brush (cheap, from hardware store)
  • Palette: disposable or glass (large size preferred)
  • Palette knife (metal)
  • Masking tape
  • 3 glass containers for cleaning brushes (baby food jars are cheap, re-sealable, and work great)
  • Brush cleaner: Ivory Soap is fine
  • Paper towels or cloth rags
  • A pad of watercolor paper: 90 lb. weight or heavier
  • Small sketchbook for studies and recording ideas
  • Optional — Canvas: unprimed, stretched or non-stretched, for students who prefer to paint on canvas and/or want to learn canvas preparation.
