Imagination & Color in Painting

Gain an introduction to fundamentals of visual language, including color and composition, and to a vocabulary of process and ideas in oil or acrylics. Investigations will include sketches, photographs, still lifes and other sources. Practical skills will include stretching canvas, preparing surfaces and mixing paint. Develop a strong foundation and personal vision that will serve you going forward. All levels welcome.

Materials

  • A selection of the following oil or acrylic colors:

       Cadmium Red
       Alizarin Crimson
       Indian Red
       Carmine Red
       Cadmium Yellow
       Lemon Yellow
       Ochre Yellow
       Ultramarine Blue
       Cobalt Blue
       Prussian Blue
       Raw Sienna
       Pthalo Green
       Titanium White
       Raw Umber
       Burnt Sienna

  • Images/pictures from various sources to use as inspiration for your new work
  • Drawing board
  • For oil painters: mineral spirits or Gamsol (odorless) in an easily coverable container
  • A selection of flat and round brushes for your choice of oils or acrylics: at least one of each in sizes #2, 4, 6, 8, 10
  • White gesso
  • 2-inch brush (cheap, from hardware store)
  • Palette: disposable or glass (large size preferred)
  • Palette knife (metal)
  • Masking tape
  • 2 glass containers for cleaning brushes
  • Brush cleaner: Ivory Soap is fine
  • Paper towels or cloth rags
  • For the first class, 3 small surfaces for your first paintings, 8.5” x 11”. Gessoed watercolor paper is ideal. After that, you will choose from among the following in various sizes: 
  • Watercolor paper: 90-lb. weight or more, for students who prefer to paint on paper.
  • Canvas: unprimed, stretched or non-stretched, for students who prefer to paint on canvas and/or want to learn canvas preparation. These students should also bring: Staple gun with staples, canvas pliers and a tape measure.
  • Canvas panel or other panel (wood, masonite, etc.)
