Paper Quilts

Create collages out of paper, stitched like fabric quilts, binding elements together into evocative art.
Fabric quilt making has a long and varied history, including quilts created for decorative purposes, quilts made of necessity and quilts that share stories and history through their pieced remnants, patterns and embellishments. Paper quilts are similar in style to fabric quilts in that they are pieced together with thread; their purpose is to create not warmth, but a piece of art as stitched collage.
Using hand and machine sewing, we will create small paper quilts from life’s ephemera to commemorate, memorialize or visually narrate a moment or memory. Your paper quilt will bind together photos, letters, news clippings and papers of any sort that share a common thread.

Materials
Please bring to class:
Paper items such as photographs, wallpaper scraps, old letters or greeting cards, newspaper or magazine clippings, drawings or doodles, and any paper scrap that you would like to incorporate into your paper quilt.
Do not bring items you cannot part with, as they will no longer exist independent of the quilt. Scans and photocopies all work well.
Ideally, items should be 5”x7” or smaller, or can be cut into smaller pieces in class.
